Midtown Students is modeled after the passage from Luke 24, where Jesus appears to some of his followers on the way to the town of Emmaus. These disciples know a lot about Jesus, but it wasn’t until they had a communal interaction with Him and each other that they recognized Jesus for who he truly was. He was not just a great teacher or prophet, but he is the Son of God and savior of the world.
Our aim is to create space for students to develop a relationship with Jesus in the same way His disciples did. We will be together, talk about the scriptures, share our struggles, enjoy a meal, and just do life together. The road to Emmaus led to Jesus, and as we walk it together, we will no doubt find Him in the same way.
For all of church history, the lamb has been been a symbol of Christ’s victory over sin and death. The event on the road to Emmaus was one of the first moments in the scriptures where Jesus revealed that he is not only a lamb led to slaughter, but he is the lamb that has overcome death, the very Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). That is why we chose this symbol as the logo for our group, because we want Christ’s victory to be ever before us. So while we walk this road of community with each other, we want to remember that it is only because of Christ’s work on the cross, that we get to share in his Joy and spread it to other.
